Director Gareth Edwards is currently helming the blockbuster Godzilla remake for Legendary Pictures, but he first burst onto the scene with a unique indie film called Monsters (read our review). The film was pretty divisive, as many detractors felt that the slow-burn romance story -and only brief appearances of actual monsters – made the title a gross misnomer. However, while a lot of people were disappointed in the core story of Monsters, that disappointment was the byproduct of excitement for what was – and still is – an intriguing premise about a world where giant alien creatures have entered our ecosystems. In the trailer for the non-sequel (let’s call it…

At the beginning of the month, we learned that Universal Pictures had hired Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes, Invictus) to script a sequel to The Bourne Legacy, the follow-up that takes place in the universe of The Bourne Identity franchise. It was assumed that the sequel would just follow Jeremy Renner as the Operation Outcome agent Aaron Cross who was targeted for termination. Now Twitch has word that Universal is keen on bringing Matt Damon as Jason Bourne into the expanded universe, which is what producer Frank Marshall already wanted to do last summer. But that’s not all Universal wants.
Matt Damon, shooting his “Affleck as Batman Reaction Video” series for Vine. The last Bourne movie starred Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, but you knew it was still a Bourne movie because the characters talked about Bourne all the time like he was Bill Brassky. Not even Burnsy liked The Bourne Legacy, the fourth of the Bourne movies, and he’s usually a sucker for these talky, oatmeal-bland extended car chases. If reports out of TwitchFilm are true (and they’re generally reliable), Universal must’ve felt the same, because they’re negotiating to bring Matt Damon back to the franchise. We’re told Damon is only interested if Greengrass is directing so there are clearly a lot of moving parts here but …

The Student of Prague, made in Germany in 1913, may well have been the very first horror movie ever made. Even if it wasn’t the first it must surely be the oldest horror movie still in existence.Another silent version of this story was made in Germany in 1926. I haven’t watched that one yet but I intend to do so in the next couple of days. When viewing a movie from such a very early period in cinema history one is inclined to make allowances. Such early movies usually suffered from very static camera setups and can be inclined to be a bit creaky. In this case however no…
