Making Time Makes Its Way to LA TONIGHT – Free w/ RSVP

So basically, Making Time is a Philly institution. If you look at my bio, I totally name check it because it’s been foundational for me. A girl that I had a huge crush on that worked at my favorite record shop invited me to a Making Time party. I went thinking I’d get with her, but ended up instead falling in love with the party. It was pre-blog culture, pre-hipsters, pre-Instagram 2000-2001. I used to go dance my head off every month to Dave P’s indie + Britpop sets and got to see bands like The Strokes, Trans Am and Adult waaaaaaayyy before they were bands anyone cared about. It was my HOME. And when I came to LA, I looked…

Two Great New Jazz Books from Taschen

Jazz Life by Joachim E. Berendt Two wonderful books have just been published by Taschen, known for its beautiful coffee table productions. The first, Jazz Life, chronicles a three month trip in 1960 across America by German jazz journalist and record producer Joachim Berendt and photographer William Claxton. Berendt wanted to experience jazz and American culture first hand and Claxton set up the tour, from New York City, through the South, and the LA scene, visiting musical capitals like New York City, Memphis, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. Claxton’s memorable photos capture more than just the jazz scene at the dawn of the Civil Rights era. Like Robert Frank‘s classic 1955 photo journey, it is a view of  America and its culture that reveals …

Monday Music News

Dr. Dog photo by Chad Syme Dr.Dog has a charming lyric video for “Broken Heart” from their upcoming album B Room. Composed of vintage footage of an amusement park, the happiness of the park seems bittersweet contrasted with the tracks title – which is fitting considering the song feels upbeat, but the lyrics tell a different story. [Sterogum] The Replacements played their first reunion show last night in Toronto, and thank god for technology because you can now watch video or stream the audio from the performance. Proving they haven’t forgotten a beat, Paul Westerburg had this to say about their 25 year hiatus, “Sorry it’s taken us so long. For 25 years we’ve been having a wardrobe debate.” Check out “Bastards of…

Harry Dean Stanton Sings Danny Boy

Photo by Larry Hirshowitz I feel it is safe to say that if you are a fan of the movies, then you are a fan of Harry Dean Stanton. For me, it is hard to separate the two… for as long as I have loved movies, he’s always been there.  He puts the “character” in character actor. From the cocky crewman in ‘Alien‘, to Molly Ringwald’s dad in ‘Pretty In Pink’, to Brain in ‘Escape From New York‘, to damn near every David Lynch film ever made. He has appeared in nearly 200 films and television series …

Lycia: Quiet Moments

For over two decades, Arizona’s Lycia have been pioneers of “darkwave,” a reverb-drenched, gothic take on dreampop. This is the Cocteau Twins, if they looked so far inward that they began to focus on the darker, downer-ridden side. Along with lovesliescrushing, who freed shoegaze from pop conventions, they became one of the noteworthy and boundary-pushing acts on the goth music label Projekt. Quiet Moments, their first release for Handmade Birds (run by Rich Loren of Pyramids, Sailors With Wax Wings, and White Moth), is consistent with their past efforts, while remaining an intriguing headphone journey. At this point, Lycia are basically Mike VanPortfleet, the multi-instrumentalist has always been the band’s…
