Eurogamer vs. Spelunky Daily Challenge

DAY 20: Today is a good news/bad news kinda day. The bad news is that today’s Daily Challenge is the last one I’m going to be recording and putting on Eurogamer, although I will still keep playing the game so you can keep an eye on the leaderboards if you want to continue competing. But the good news is twofold: first, I had an amazing run! You’ll see. The second is that I have a very special video prepared for tomorrow, which I think anyone who has watched a few of these challenges will enjoy. Good luck with your runs – today and forever more.DAY 19: I had such a good feeling about today. As we …

Betrayer Review (PC)

Blackpowder Games, composed of a group of veteran developers from Monolith Productions, and who brought you No One Lives and the F.E.A.R. series, delivers a one of a kind horror FPS called Betrayer. The year is 1604, the turn of the 17th century.  You have sailed from England, thinking you would be joining a struggling colony on the coast of Virginia.  Instead however, you find yourself only seeing ghosts and solving mysteries.  What chaos has engulfed the land and drained it of color and life?  What happened to all the settlers and tribes who lived here?  And who is that strange and silent woman in red who aids you from afar? Little by little, you must figure out and…

Resetting the Console Wars – Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Get a Fresh Start

The upcoming generation of consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 specifically, feel a bit like an old school console war. The mud slinging, slight of hand, and jabs between Sony and Microsoft remind us of Nintendo and Sega from the Genesis and SNES era. But are fans sticking in the corner of their favorite console manufacturer? While this generation was "close" – the Xbox 360 made Microsoft a dominant force in the console world with almost 80 million units sold, and consistently outselling all other consoles monthly for almost three years in North America. The PlayStation 3? Worldwide Sony has pulled "ahead" and passed Microsoft in sales. But despite what the companies say, this upcoming generation should …

The ever-changing Lokopolis is for greedy treasure hunters

Oh yes, Ludum Dare 27 has just ended, and as I already did with the previous one, I’m going to be picking the most appealing entries that would roughly fit our area of interest for the next few days. Or in other words, expect to see a never ending trail of games that are going to have in common the same theme, which this time was “10 seconds”. Can’t really deny the sadness to have all these games to play right a week before a big exam, but I’m anyway going to put twice the effort to get my coverage going without affecting too much my studies. And in fact, I can’t imagine a better…

By: Jeremy Parish March 21, 2013 On the surface of it, Luigi’s Mansion seems a strange choice for Nintendo to explore in a sequel, especially one arriving nearly 12 years after the first (and only other) entry in the series. The 2001 GameCube launch title was …

Rayman Legends review

It’s delightful, of course. That won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who played Rayman Origins, one of 2011’s best games and an unlikely return to form for a character most had written off. With such a solid foundation, Michel Ancel and his team at Ubisoft’s Montpellier studio haven’t reinvented the wheel. What they’ve done is take an already wonderful wheel and polished it into something remarkable.Like the previous game, this is a 2D platformer in unashamedly classic style, delivering a constant stream of small gameplay nuggets. Every jump is a test, every obstacle a trial. Some must be tackled at speed, others allow you to think…

PS4 May Not Be Getting Gran Turismo 6, May Skip To 7 Instead

function dtauthorpe(){var productElement=document.getElementById(“dtauthor_tracking”);if(productElement==null){document.getElementById(“authorprofilebox”).innerHTML=” “;}}function dtpixell(){var productElement=document.getElementById(“dtpixell”);if(productElement==null){document.getElementById(“authorprofilebox”).innerHTML=” “;}}With the release of the PS4 to come later this year, it’s a bit surprising to see that one of Sony’s biggest franchises, Gran Turismo, won’t be coming out for the system when it launches. Granted, so far the PS4 has had no trouble in selling units so far, with over 1 million preorders being made to date, but the fact remains that Sony is only releasing Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3 this year, with no date on when it’ll be coming to the PS4 yet. Of course, there’s the possibility that the…

Indie game Gentlemen! was bought 144 times, pirated over 50,000

Gentlemen! by Lucky Frame is a popular indie title for Android tablets, iPad, PC and Mac that has players swap gravity, chuck knives, and send homing pigeons at one another in local multiplayer deathmatches. It has garnered critical praise and the Android version has been downloaded more than 50,000 times – unfortunately, as of four days ago, only 144 of those downloads were legitimate, while the rest were pirated. Yann Seznec, director of Lucky Frame, shared the disparaging data via a Gamasutra blog, where he tried to decipher why things went south. The largest group of pirates, Seznec found, came from Russia and China, where “… most of these pirates probably exist in a…

Device 6: Adventure texts

In the beginning was the word. Words made the world and everything in it. Words made oceans surrounding a slope-backed island, and they made the steep, jutting rock of the island itself. They made a game, of sorts, and they made the landscape for the game to play out across. They made the characters in the game – all but one of them – and they provided puzzles for that final, missing character to work their way through. The end result? The end result is a game that has its developer laughing and shrugging as he tries to explain things to me. “It turns out that …

Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse gets a slick debut trailer

Nearly a year ago a new Broken Sword sequel, The Serpent’s Curse, was greenlit after nearly doubling its $400K Kickstarter goal with $771,560. Now series creator Charles Cecil and his colleagues at Revolution Software have released the first trailer for the upcoming globe-trotting adventure about attorney George Stoppard and his French journalist gal-pal Nico Collard. We saw a very small glimpse at The Serpent’s Curse’s art style in its Kickstarter pitch last September, but the minute-and-a-half trailer shows a lot more of its scenic locations, puzzle-based downtime, and flashy cinematics. It’s a unique art style that hearkens back to the late 90s with its use of 3…
