The Impact of Women on Gendo Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Have you ever noticed how men tend to act differently when they are around women? Compared to when they are not near or are influenced by them, men become gentler and/or may become crazier. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of anime/manga’s most memorable fathers, Gendo Ikari, falls right into this shell. He treats his son, Shinji Ikari, like garbage while treating one of his soldiers, Rei Ayanami, like a goddess. In addition to that, Gendo’s actions throughout the series have been motivated by his dead wife. His story is quite a look at how men transform when a women is involved in their lives.  Gendo’s story revolved around his manipulation of a variety of people in order to wipe…

9th Art Winner – Gigantic Beard takes the prize

The inaugural 9th Art Awards at the Edinburgh Book Festival’s Stripped event were announced last night, with Stephen Collins’ excellent ‘The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil‘ beating out considerable competition from the other books on the shortlist: Gigantic Beard follows the life of ordinary Dave, who likes nothing more than a night in sketching the everyday life passing by in boring monotony and predictable order outside his window. He lives in a world of order, on the perfectly shaped island of Here, where everyone looks inwards, always the same, monotony and order leading to a life of boredom and conformity. Until the beard comes along. The evil beard. The book is…

Celebrating ESP-DISK’ : 50 Years of Unimaginable Sounds – Imagined

In 1963 a record label began on the 12th floor of 156 Fifth Avenue in New York City by releasing its first LP. Bernard Stollman, a 34 year old jazz fan with a law background, had been working with some rhythm and blues and jazz musicians, helping them with copyright and contract issues. Bernard Stollman and one of his early ESP logos. Stollman had also learned the "International Auxiliary Language," Esperanto and recorded an album of songs and poetry all spoken in Esperanto, which he had hoped would further promote the language. Watch This: Early Unused Avengers Animatic

I love seeing the tricks and effort that go into “movie magic.” Concept art, early animatics, CG tricks, anything that shows how they create the amazing stuff you see on screen. That’s why I was super interested to see on The Awesomer a link to an early animatic for The Avengers, focusing on Iron Man’s introduction. It’s way more exciting and interesting than the one we got, but I can understand why it was ditched: why do we need to be introduced to a villain right away that we’ll never see again? Still, if you’re like me and love seeing this behind-the-scenes work, check it out below.

SyFy "Eats Up" the Summer

What can I say, I had a bit of a bump between my last post and this post. Doesn’t mean that I had given up on my enjoyment of “B-Movies.” To be honest, some of them don’t even deserve a “B-Movie” Rating. Just last night, I was laying down to catch up my kingdom (in “Kingdom Age”) on my iPad, when WA-LA – there was “Piranhaconda!” I had to watch! While not the campy gore of Sharktopus, Piranhaconda offered a semi-serious story of screaming botoxed women. Men are usually not botoxed on SyFy. Prinhaconda offered plenty of gore, but in some cases, the people…

VICE Creates Animated Kung Fu Lessons To Promote Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster”

VICE has produced three short animated pieces as a promotional supplement for the release of Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster, a fictionalized account of the life of Chinese martial artist (and Bruce Lee trainer) Ip Man. Each of the shorts, animated in a limited moving-comic style, explains a specific martial arts style: Wing Chun, Hung Gar and Ba Gua. The design and animation was handled by Erie, Pennsylvania-based MoreFrames.

News: Original Hardcover Volume One and Two Limited Editions

Clearing through some boxes a few weeks ago, I came across one in particular that I thought contained paperback Volume Three. In fact, it held an old personal stash of the original hardcovers for Volume One and Two, from back in 2005. Given that I clearly didn’t remember that I had these, and I have my own copies, I’m going to make these available to anyone that wants to pick them up. These are extremely limited in quantity; I have nineteen copies of Volume One, and nine copies of Volume Two. These books feature the original covers, and there will never, ever, be more of these printed. These are just leftovers from the 2005 run. These books are signed with a 2005 signature (I always put …
