Device 6: Adventure texts

In the beginning was the word. Words made the world and everything in it. Words made oceans surrounding a slope-backed island, and they made the steep, jutting rock of the island itself. They made a game, of sorts, and they made the landscape for the game to play out across. They made the characters in the game – all but one of them – and they provided puzzles for that final, missing character to work their way through. The end result? The end result is a game that has its developer laughing and shrugging as he tries to explain things to me. “It turns out that …

Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse gets a slick debut trailer

Nearly a year ago a new Broken Sword sequel, The Serpent’s Curse, was greenlit after nearly doubling its $400K Kickstarter goal with $771,560. Now series creator Charles Cecil and his colleagues at Revolution Software have released the first trailer for the upcoming globe-trotting adventure about attorney George Stoppard and his French journalist gal-pal Nico Collard. We saw a very small glimpse at The Serpent’s Curse’s art style in its Kickstarter pitch last September, but the minute-and-a-half trailer shows a lot more of its scenic locations, puzzle-based downtime, and flashy cinematics. It’s a unique art style that hearkens back to the late 90s with its use of 3…

The Impact of Women on Gendo Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Have you ever noticed how men tend to act differently when they are around women? Compared to when they are not near or are influenced by them, men become gentler and/or may become crazier. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of anime/manga’s most memorable fathers, Gendo Ikari, falls right into this shell. He treats his son, Shinji Ikari, like garbage while treating one of his soldiers, Rei Ayanami, like a goddess. In addition to that, Gendo’s actions throughout the series have been motivated by his dead wife. His story is quite a look at how men transform when a women is involved in their lives.  Gendo’s story revolved around his manipulation of a variety of people in order to wipe…

Celebrating ESP-DISK’ : 50 Years of Unimaginable Sounds – Imagined

In 1963 a record label began on the 12th floor of 156 Fifth Avenue in New York City by releasing its first LP. Bernard Stollman, a 34 year old jazz fan with a law background, had been working with some rhythm and blues and jazz musicians, helping them with copyright and contract issues. News: Original Hardcover Volume One and Two Limited Editions

Clearing through some boxes a few weeks ago, I came across one in particular that I thought contained paperback Volume Three. In fact, it held an old personal stash of the original hardcovers for Volume One and Two, from back in 2005. Given that I clearly didn’t remember that I had these, and I have my own copies, I’m going to make these available to anyone that wants to pick them up. These are extremely limited in quantity; I have nineteen copies of Volume One, and nine copies of Volume Two. These books feature the original covers, and there will never, ever, be more of these printed. These are just leftovers from the 2005 run. These books are signed with a 2005 signature (I always put …

Number 1426: Firebrand and the Brick Batman

It appears that the Firebrand, who appeared on the covers of the first four issues of Quality’s Police Comics, was intended to be the star of the comic. The feature was drawn by Reed Crandall, in a style obviously inspired by Lou Fine. Crandall’s figures stiffened up in his later years, looking something like statuary rather than the fluid, action-packed poses of the Firebrand. The Firebrand’s costume looks like something between a circus performer and ballet dancer, and maybe it’s the see-through tunic, or a panel on page nine of Firebrand running — which looks like Nureyev leaping — that make me think that way,711, who is a prison trusty, apparently has his …

In Which Adam is Pleasantly Surprised by Accidentally Discovering Something Thought-Provoking

Because I’m all heart, I’m the first to say when those who create our treasured comics do something amazing. It’s the least I could do, as I’m always waiting in the wings to poke fun when they don’t quite hit it out of the park.Such is the case with Spy Smasher #10:In the lead story, he decides to head straight over to Germany and do the world a favor and take Hitler out once and for all:This was not some dream or imaginary story, as was often done when other comic characters were depicted smacking Hitler on behalf of several grateful nations. It’s also worth noting that comic book characters were often written out of getting involved directly with…
