Cat + Gamer Volume 5 – Comics Worth Reading

In Cat + Gamer volume 5, the second cat, Soboro, who joined the family in volume 4, has settled in. That brings this series back to what appealed to me about the first volume: continuing comparisons of raising healthy, happy kitties and gaming activities. Cat + Gamer is by Wataru Nadatani, and the series is translated to English by Zack Davisson.

In various chapters, Riko gives the cats special treats and ponders greed, posts a picture to social media that goes viral, washes and brushes her pets, and watches them chase each other around the apartment, adding her own sport-announcer narration. The cats share their thoughts on sleeping positions, and Riko has a special celebration day.

The cats are beautifully drawn. They look like the animals they are, but with expression and personality. While the Bonus Stages give a brief view of the cats’ perspective in one or two pages after each chapter, it was a fun change of pace to see the cats have their own game-like adventure when Riko rushes off to work without putting everything away.

Everyone, owner and pets alike, are adorable in this series, but not in an excessive way. I love the quiet observations about life with cats, particularly since I can’t have any. (The publisher provided a digital review copy.)
