Even though 24 was outstanding during its prime, the TV series slightly overstayed its welcome, and my hope is that a similar show on Netflix won’t suffer from the same fate. The Fox action drama, created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, premiered in 2001 and ended in 2010, lasting for eight seasons and 192 episodes before the network brought it back for one more season (24: Live Another Day) in 2014. Over the course of its run, many praised 24 for being one of the best shows on TV, but critical consensus started to somewhat wane towards the end.

Of course, one cannot compare 24 to the likes of Grey’s Anatomy or Supernatural when discussing TV series that lasted for too long and worsened as the years passed. 24‘s final few seasons were still entertaining, but they weren’t nearly as great as the earlier ones. However, just because the action drama didn’t completely drop off as the seasons went on doesn’t mean that 24‘s replacement show on Netflix will be the same or should even aim for a similar timeline of nine seasons.
Netflix’s The Night Agent Is The Perfect Spiritual Successor To 24
The Night Agent Shares Many Similarities With 24
The Night Agent is the perfect show for those missing 24, and the good news is that season 2 should be coming soon as all 10 episodes have been filmed and edited. The Netflix action thriller, created by Shawn Ryan, is based on Matthew Quirk’s book of the same name. It follows FBI Agent Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso in the cast of The Night Agent, who works at the White House as a Night Action telephone operator. One night, the phone rings, and Peter is suddenly thrust into a conspiracy about a mole in the U.S. government.
Even though the Netflix series is an anthology with each season covering a completely different case, it wouldn’t be logical for
The Night Agent
to last for almost a decade, like
24.
Similar to 24, The Night Agent serves as a sort of anthology series that still revolves around one main character. For 24, it was Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer, and for The Night Agent, it’s Basso’s Peter Sutherland. Both shows are high-stakes political thrillers that follow complex conspiracies, terrorist cases, and everything in between. However, whereas the Fox show was on the air for more than a decade, Netflix’s 24 replacement shouldn’t last for nearly as long.

The Night Agent Definitely Doesn’t Need To Run For 9 Seasons
The Netflix Series Needs To End Before It Overstays Its Welcome
While, at first glance, it might be exciting for beloved TV shows to last as long as possible, they also need to know when it’s time to end before the stories drag on and the characters are ruined. Hopefully, this won’t be the case for The Night Agent, and it won’t run for nine seasons. Even though the Netflix series is an anthology with each season covering a completely different case, it wouldn’t be logical for The Night Agent to last for almost a decade, like 24.

The Night Agent doesn’t have the runway that 24 did, and it needs to learn from its predecessor’s mistakes by ending before its acclaim starts to decline. Plus, the fact that one is a network series and the other is on streaming weighs heavily on its shelf life as one takes much longer to produce than the other. Whereas the turnover for a new 24 season was a few months, The Night Agent‘s is a year or more, and it wouldn’t be feasible for one of Netflix’s best action shows to run for nine seasons.
The Night Agent
The Night Agent is a Netflix original series based on the novel by Matthew Quirk. The show centers on a young entry-level FBI agent named Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) who handles a hotline in the basement of the White House that never rings. When the phone finally does, Peter finds himself embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy that climbs all the way to the top.
